A project in Ireland plans to replenish ancient Redwood forests that used to thrive in the country long ago. The redwoods (sequoioideae) were native inhabitants to Ireland up until the last ice age but were wiped out about 3 million years ago. The Giants Grove project is an effort to revitalize and regrow the majestic ancient forests that inspired Ireland to be what it is and to help curb the effects of climate change.
The forest will be planted adjacent to a medieval Irish castle near waterfalls and gardens and will contain approximately 2,000 Redwood trees!
It dates back to medieval times and was restored by a family hundreds of years ago.
The project will be located at Birr Castle in Co. Offaly and will allow individuals to sponsor a tree for a small price of just €500 (about $545). The fee includes watering, care and maintenance for the next several hundred to thousands of years as they work hard to regrow these giant trees on the property near the beautiful castle.
The castle itself is home to some of Ireland's most lush gardens and interesting scientific finds and features including a telescope, one of the world's oldest dark rooms and a science center to study and celebrate the region's thriving botanical varieties.
Future Generations Will Enjoy This Magnificent Forest
Lord Rosse, the seventh Earl of Rosse, has collaborated the historic project along with the help of Crann 'Trees for Ireland' which is an environmental protection group. The goal of the project is not only to bring back historic species of plant life but to also combat climate change and bring awareness to environmental issues. The forest should be something that future generations will truly enjoy and cherish. Rosse describes the reforestation project to IrishCentral as being very close to his heart. “Our grandchildren, their grandchildren, Birr, Ireland and the world will benefit from this magnificent forest grove.”
“By investing in this project with us, the sponsors will have the opportunity to make a personal impact on Ireland’s environment and world biodiversity conservation.” - Rosse
You Can Sponsor A Majestic Redwood Tree
Anyone can sponsor as many trees as they'd like and they hope they will have enough sponsors to begin the project officially in the Spring of 2017. The organizations will send you a GPS location for your tree and ensure it's raised with care for generations to come. Your name will be enlisted in a records book to note your sponsorship and the record will also be published online. You can sponsor the tree for yourself or a loved one in their memory.
